The Path to Responsible Conscious AI

We’re thrilled to be launching PRISM with a workshop "The Path to Responsible Conscious AI” at AI UK 2025, the UK’s national showcase of data science and artificial intelligence (AI), organised by the Alan Turing Institute.

Details

When: March 17 2025
Time: 10am until 12noon
Where: Queen Elizabeth II Centre in Westminster, London

Synopsis

As AI systems grow more advanced humanity faces a number of profound questions: Could AI ever become conscious? If so, is that desirable? Could machines develop the ability to feel or even suffer, and what are the moral, practical, and societal implications?

This workshop, led by PRISM (The Partnership for Research into Sentient Machines) and Conscium, explores some of the leading research on consciousness and how it relates to machine intelligence. Building on the ideas outlined in the recent paper “Principles for Responsible AI Consciousness Research” (Butlin & Lappas 2025), participants will engage in thought-provoking discussions examining potential future scenarios. Ranging from a future where machine consciousness remains a theoretical concept to one where a conscious superintelligence is a reality, we will be exploring how science, morality, and policy should guide us to give us the best chance of a safe future with AI.

Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the potential promise and peril of conscious AI and help shape how we approach this world-changing issue.
